2018 – the year of our heritage

2018 has been designated as the European Year of Cultural Heritage (ERDK 2018). In connection with the event a Europe-wide educational campaign has been organized to promote the expansion of knowledge about the social and economic significance of cultural heritage.

Coordination of the project in Poland will be conducted from Krakow which was the first European city to be entered into UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites, and last year was the host of the meeting of the 41st Session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee.

The Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage has designated the International Cultural Center in the “Pod Kruki” building on the Main Square as the nation-wide coordinator of the ERDK 2018 project. The ICC has existed since 1991. Under the direction of its founder and long-time director Prof. Jacek Purchla, the Center has focused its publishing, academic, and exhibition activities on issues of cultural heritage, multi-culturalism in Central Europe, cultural dialog, and the protection of historical complexes.

Within the framework of the ERDK 2018 campaign, the ICC has proposed many diverse projects. These will be targeted at a wide breadth of the public; first at children and youth, those social elements oriented towards heritage, policy-makers, and representatives of the business world. One of the ICC’s priorities will be to engage these groups in the protection of heritage as well as encouraging the cooperation of others working in various sectors (protection of heritage, business, the cultural and creative sector, tourism, etc.).

The Center plans a series of educational programs, as well as, i.a. a conference dedicated to the logo of European cultural heritage established in 2011 by the European Union and its application in practice. Seminars on the social and economic potential of heritage will be held in six Polish cities. There will be exhibitions, including one on “The Architecture of Independence in Central Europe”. It is worthwhile to remember that the year 2018 will also bring the one hundredth anniversary of Poland’s recovery of its independence.

2018 – rok dla naszego dziedzictwa

Rok 2018 został ustanowiony Europejskim Rokiem Dziedzictwa Kulturowego (ERDK 2018).
