A Transport Revolution

0

Wawel Castle, the Cloth Hall, St Mary’s Basilica…. These are the architectural icons of medieval and Renaissance Kraków. But the city also has emblematic buildings from the industrial revolution, such as a railway viaduct over ul. Grzegórzecka. The E30 train route that connects Western Europe with Ukraine runs through Kraków, and so has crossed the viaduct for 150 years, as well as stopped at the main railway station in Kraków, which is on the right-bank of the Vistula River. When the viaduct was being constructed at the beginning of the second half of the 19th century it was… a bridge. It became a viaduct when the bed of the Vistula River was drained and one of the most important streets in Kraków was built in its stead. Now the well-known viaduct is undergoing another transformation, which a sign of the great changes taking place in Kraków.

The viaduct is being expanded so that two more tracks can run alongside the two that have existed since the 19th century. These are intended to improve the long-distance connections, but above all the communication network within the agglomeration of Kraków in order to meet the daily needs of the city itself as well as the residents from the surrounding area.

The extension of the viaduct is only a part of a much larger modernization project, which will cost nearly a quarter of a million euros. It includes the construction of two new E30 tracks, together with the necessary infrastructure, the expansion of the railway bridge across the Vistula River, and the building of several new, modern stations. This will allow trains to be used within the municipal transport system to a greater extent than at present. It is also of enormous importance to the over 10 million tourists visiting Kraków every year because this is the route that connects the centre of Kraków with the airport (in the east) and the famous salt mine in Wieliczka (in the west). The improvements to the communication system will make it possible to travel to both from the historical centre of Kraków in a quarter of an hour.

Increasing the capacity of the railways is one element of the transformations in Kraków. In recent years, has the city had been expanding into areas that were peripheral in the 19th and 20th centuries. These districts were where the large industrial plants were constructed, plants which survived until the end of the 20th century. Now these areas are being adapted to the industrial needs of the 21st century, with huge complexes of high-class office buildings appearing in which tens of thousands work. The lives of these individuals in the city will be greatly facilitated thanks to the agglomeration railway. (b)

Komunikacyjna rewolucja

Wawel, Sukiennice, kościół mariacki… To ikony architektoniczne średniowiecznego i renesansowego Krakowa.

Mają one służyć usprawnieniu komunikacji dalekobieżnej, ale przede wszystkim aglomeracyjnej, a więc służącej zaspokajaniu codziennych potrzeb komunikacyjnych mieszkańców Krakowa i okolic.

Poszerzenie wiaduktu to tylko element dużo większego projektu modernizacyjnego, na którego realizację przeznaczono niemal ćwierć miliona euro. Obejmie on budowę w Krakowie nowej pary torów na linii E30 wraz i infrastrukturą energetyczną, rozbudowę mostu kolejowego przez Wisłę, a także budowę kilku nowych i nowoczesnych przystanków. Pozwolą one w dużo większym stopniu niż dzisiaj wykorzystywać kolej w miejskiej komunikacji. Mają też olbrzymie znaczenie dla ponad 10 milionów turystów odwiedzających Kraków w ciągu każdego roku. Chodzi przecież o połączenie centrum Krakowa z portem lotniczym (na Wschodzie) i słynną kopalnią soli w Wieliczce. Usprawnienie komunikacji spowoduje, że podróż w te miejsca z bezpośredniego sąsiedztwa historycznej część Krakowa potrwa kwadrans.

Zwiększenie przepustowości linii kolejowej to element przemian cywilizacyjnych w Krakowie. Dotrwały do końca XX wieku.
