An Accumulation of Important Anniversaries

An interview with Jan Godłowski, Director of Krakow’s Saltworks Museum (Muzeum Żup Krakowskich).

• A dream is being fulfilled: the museum now has yet another building. What does this mean for the future of your establishment?

• It would be more appropriate to say that Krakow’s Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka is in the process of acquiring a new building. We already have the consent of the Wieliczki District councillors but we are waiting for the final decision in the matter. We hope it will be positive. Funds for the purchase of the building have already been promised by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. If no problems arise, the building will have been bought by the end of this year. The Minister of Culture, Prof. Piotr Gliński, also supports our plans, which when implemented will obviously increase the size of our institution. However, the main objective behind these plans is to use the whole of Zamek Żupny (the Saltworks Castle) for exhibitions. In the past, the castle was the seat of the board who managed Kraków Saltworks (ca 13th century to 1945), a fact which led to its inclusion on the prestigious UNESCO List. It is the most important monument above ground in Wieliczka that is connected with its mining history. Thus, it seems appropriate to use it for the cultural purposes we propose. We intend to open a large permanent exhibition about the history of the company, as well as the history of the town of Wieliczka, and also a collection of saltcellars. Additionally, we intend to allocate considerably more space to temporary exhibitions. This space has been lacking so far. The interior designs are of the highest standards and will enable important exhibitions to be organised, including exhibits loaned from abroad. We hope that Wieliczka will also benefit, because tourists will have one more reason to visit.

• How do you actually plan to use the new building itself?

• It should be mentioned that the building we are purchasing is in itself architecturally significant. In the past, it housed the Court of Justice. Yet because Wieliczka Museum is a scientific institution, the new building will house content-related departments and the museum offices. The location of this building, and its surroundings, near the salt mine is really a great advantage – after all the main part of the museum is located in the mine itself at a depth of 135 m. Visitors will also benefit because the location, so close to the Salt Mine, will allow the area to be developed as a whole.

• The coming year has a special significance for Poland, because 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Polish independence. In 2018, there will also be celebrations of the most important events in the history of Kraków’s Saltworks. How will this be reflected in the museum?

• Indeed, the year 2018 is unique due to the extraordinary number of anniversaries related to Kraków’s Saltworks. I think they are important, and not only for Poland, as they are part of the history of mining throughout the world. In chronological order it will be 650 years since the Statute of the Kraków Salt Mine, that is the mining law, was written in 1368; 500 years since the creation of the Brief but Detailed Description of the Management and Relations in the Salt Mines of Wieliczka and Bochnia in 1518, which is an extremely important document describing the functioning of the company at that time and which was included on the Polish National List in the UNESCO Programme ‘Memory of the World’ in 2014; 90 years since the first presidential decree regarding the protection of underground heritage (Poland is considered to be the leader in the protection of such heritage); 40 years since Wieliczka Salt Mine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, and 5 years since the UNESCO List was expanded to include the Bochnia Salt Mine and the Saltworks Castle in Wieliczka.

These celebrations are to be part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of Polish independence, a fact which also had a considerable impact on the mine itself. In November 2018, we, that is the Wieliczka Salt Mine and the Salt Mine in Bochnia, will organize an International Conference for Mining Museums and Underground Museums. The first day of the session will be devoted to the important events mentioned above because we want this information to be more widely known. There will also be an exhibition focusing on the independence movements in Poland, as well as the Polish participation in the national liberation struggles in other countries. Finally, the events that took place 100 years ago, how the new state and its borders were formed, and how international politics influenced these processes will be explained.

Jakie znajdzie to odzwierciedlenie w ofercie Muzeum?

W listopadzie 2018 r. zorganizujemy Międzynarodową Konferencję Muzeów Górniczych i Skansenów Podziemnych wspólnie z Kopalnią Soli „Wieliczka” i Kopalnią Soli w Bochni.
