The Old Synagogue, an extremely significant building both for the Jewish religion and Jewish culture in Poland, was from the time of its construction in Kazimierz in the late fifteenth century, not only the main temple of Kraków’s Jewish community that dramatically expanded in the following centuries, but was also its spiritual and cultural centre until 1939, that is until the Nazi invasion of Poland. After World War II, a museum about the Jewish history and culture in Kraków was created in the building. Presently, as well as the permanent exhibition, an interesting temporary exhibition devoted to the Old Synagogue itself, ‘The Stronghold of Tradition’, can also be visited.
The Old Synagogue is a two-aisled building, which is a reference to the architecture of the Golden Gate in Jerusalem. This concept was used in the construction of only four synagogues in Europe, those in Regensburg, Worms, Prague and Kraków, the latter being the furthest east.
The Old Synagogue was originally built in the Renaissance style, together with elements characteristic of  late Gothic. Its present form is the result of the reconstruction carried out under the supervision of the Italian architect, Matteo Gucci, after a great fire in Kazimierz in the second half of the sixteenth century. For centuries, it witnessed not only the everyday life of the Jewish community, but also many historical events. For example, Rabbi Isaac Levi twice cursed the Kraków Hasids within its walls in the late eighteenth century and in 1794 Tadeusz Kościuszko addressed the Jews there when appealing to them to join the fight against those countries who had partitioned Poland.
The permanent exhibition in the Old Synagogue concerns the most important Jewish festivals, their religion and their family life, explaining the accompanying traditions from birth until death. The temporary exhibition, ‘The Stronghold of Tradition’, is focused on the history of the synagogue itself. It begins with a map of Europe that shows the location of the unique, two-aisled synagogues, as well as illustrations and descriptions of each, in order to underline the historical and cultural context in which the Kraków synagogue was founded. In the next sections of the exhibition, paintings, graphic works and archaeological exhibits are displayed. The latter come from the archaeological studies of the Old Synagogue which were undertaken in the past few years. (b)

W Starej Synagodze wystawa o Starej Synagodze

W 1794 r. przemawiał tu do Żydów Tadeusz Kościuszko wzywając do wspólnej walki z zaborcami , którzy zniszczyli wtedy polską państwowość.
Chodzi o pokazanie kontekstu historycznego i kulturowego, w jakim powstał i trwał krakowski zabytek.
