An interview with Leszek Dorula, Mayor of Zakopane.
• You have governed Zakopane for nearly two years and so perhaps you can say which of the tasks that have been undertaken were the most important in order to make the many visitors to the town enjoy their stay even more?
• Tourists who come to Zakopane want to have a good time and relax amid the beautiful scenery, so therefore there are always concerts, festivals and sporting events, including many innovative events that we have organized in our city for the first time, such as the Hey Fest or the Zakopane Literary Festival. We have also addressed the aesthetics of Zakopane by introducing a Cultural Park, as well as public transport for the first time in the history of the town.
• How significant, in your opinion, is the increasing the number of foreign visitors to Zakopane?
• Of course, this makes us very happy. Indeed English, German or French is heard more and more often on Krupówki Street and in the surrounding valleys. Moreover, we even have visitors from such faraway places as Qatar and Senegal. It testifies to the growing popularity of Poland, and especially Zakopane and the Tatras, where there is a unique folklore and the most beautiful mountains.
• The winter season is fast approaching. What is available in Zakopane for skiers?
• As usual snow and beautiful weather! There will be a special New Year’s Eve celebration full of folk music at the foot of the Tatras, which we are organizing together with TVP Katowice. And in January, as always, there is the greatest skiing event of the year, the Ski Jumping World Cup, as well as the reactivated Zakopane Cup for Alpine Skiing.
• In previous years, Zakopane became fashionable with tourists from the east of Poland. Sadly, the conflict in Ukraine resulted in a sharp decline in their numbers. Has anything changed in this regard?
• Unfortunately, the situation in Ukraine is still far from stable and not conducive to tourist trips, but, as previously mentioned, Zakopane is visited by more and more tourists from abroad, including those from the east, who are always more than welcome.
• As we have discussed, Zakopane is known for its great sporting and cultural events. What are the plans for the coming year?
• The New Year’s Eve concert at Równia Krupowa, the Ski Jumping World Cup, as well as the annual festival involving highlanders from all over the world – the International Festival of Mountain Folklore to be held in August 2017. However, Zakopane is not only a venue for such large events, as there are also hundreds of meetings, concerts, sporting events and activities for children throughout the year. So do come and visit Zakopane. There is no chance of feeling bored here, and there is something to do for everyone!

• Od niemal dwóch lat rządzi Pan Zakopanem. Jakie zadania uważa Pan po tym czasie za najważniejsze do zrealizowania, aby goście tak licznie przybywający do miasta czuli się tam jeszcze lepiej?

• Na pewno śniegiem i piękną pogodą. Zapraszam 31 grudnia na wyjątkowy Sylwester Pod Tatrami, który organizujemy wspólnie z TVP Katowice, pełen folkowej muzyki i tradycyjnie już w styczniu na największe narciarskie święto – Puchar Świata w skokach narciarskich, a także na reaktywowany po latach Puchar Zakopanego w narciarstwie alpejskim.

• Seit beinahe zwei Jahren regieren Sie Zakopane. Welche Aufgaben betrachten Sie nach dieser Zeit als die am wichtigsten zu realisierenden, damit die Gäste, die so zahlreich in die Stadt kommen, sich dort noch wohler fühlen?
• Den Gästen, die nach Zakopane kommen und sich gut unterhalten und in der Natur erholen möchten, bieten wir eine Reihe von Konzerten, Festivals und Sportveranstaltungen an, darunter viele innovative, die in unserer Stadt zum ersten Mal organisiert werden, wie das Hej Fest oder das Literaturfestival Zakopane. Wir kümmern uns um die Ästhetik Zakopanes, indem wir einen Kulturpark schaffen, und auch um eine gute Kommunikation der Stadt – zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte – durch Einführung eines städtischen Verkehrs.
• Welche Bedeutung messen Sie dem Anstieg der Zahl der ausländischen Gäste in Zakopane bei?
• Diese Tatsache erfreut uns sehr. Auf Krupówki und in den Tälern kann man immer häufiger Englisch, Deutsch oder Französisch hören. Wir haben sogar Gäste aus solch exotischen Ländern wir Katar oder Senegal. Das zeugt von der immer mehr steigenden Popularität Polens, der Tatra und Zakopanes, des Ortes mit seiner einmaligen Folklore und den schönsten Bergen.
• Vor uns liegt die Wintersaison. Mit welchen Neuheiten begrüßt Zakopane die Skifahrer?
• Natürlich mit Schnee und schönem Wetter. Ich lade für den 31. Dezember zu einer besonderen Silvesterfeier am Fuße der Tatra ein, die wir zusammen mit TVP Katowice, voll mit Folk-Musik, organisieren, und traditionell schon im Januar zur großen Skifeier, dem Weltpokal im Skispringen, und auch zum nach Jahren reaktivierten Zakopane-Pokal im alpinen Skifahren.
• In den vergangenen Jahren war Zakopane unter den Touristen aus dem Osten in Mode. Der Konflikt in der Ukraine verursachte einen gewaltigen Rückgang dieser Zahlen. Ist es gelungen, diesen Effekt umzukehren?
• Leider ist die Situation in der Ukraine weiterhin instabil und ungünstig für touristische Reisen, aber, wie ich bereits erwähnte, Zakopane besuchen immer mehr ausländische Touristen, darunter auch solche aus dem Osten, die bei uns immer gern gesehen sind.
• Zakopane ist berühmt für die Organisation großer sportlicher und kultureller Veranstaltungen. Welche Pläne haben Sie für das nächste Jahr?
