An interview with Prof. Tadeusz Słomka PhD, Eng, Rector of the Stanisław Staszic AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.
• It is twenty five years since Poland returned to a free market economy, and ten years since its accession to the European Union. What do you consider to be the most significant changes that have taken place at the AGH University of Science and Technology during this period?
• Our university has gone through a metamorphosis especially during the so-called EU decade. We have opened ourselves to the world and received a huge cash injection such as has never been seen at the university in the almost one hundred years of its history. The same is true for the Polish higher education system as a whole, but we seem to have used this time particularly well. During the last decade, a solid foundation has been built to allow for further advancement in the years to come. A number of large, modern scientific and teaching centres have been opened in various technological fields such as information technology, ceramics and advanced materials as well as nanotechnology. These centres should enable us to rapidly catch up with the leading institutions in Europe who undertake research in these fields. A very modern Energy Centre is under construction too. It will be the largest such centre (15,000 sq. m. with 38 laboratory complexes) and will be used to research almost all aspects of energetics. We also have one of the three best electron microscopes in Europe. Our supercomputer, ‘Zeus’, is almost within the top one hundred digital machines, with reference to computing capacity, in the world, and we are preparing for a substantial expansion of its capacity. We are becoming the largest computing centre in Poland and one of the largest in this part of Europe. Finally, the methodology behind our education, now carried out in a very modern environment, has changed considerably too.
• In recent years, the number of contracts which AGH has signed with major global corporations has risen dramatically. What are the actual benefits of such collaborative work?
• I am pleased by this fact as it is the top corporations themselves that often initiate the process and wish to formalize their work with us. In this way we increase the number of places where our students can undergo their practical training in a modern industrial environment. We undertake design projects for these industries and receive modern software from them. Thanks to such contacts, within Polish academia we are the most successful when it comes to obtaining industrial contracts. Over the next few years, their value will reach 1 billion PLN. Every year, we realize projects worth about 200-250 million PLN, which is a considerable percentage of our entire budget.
• Do you see any links between the growing potential of the university and its participation in international research?
• What started 25 years ago has changed the mentality of many Poles, including our own, that is the mentality of the university staff. Not only are the authorities of the university elected in a democratic way, but their objectives, including those related to international cooperation, are determined by those who elect them. Today, our international contacts result in thousands of exchange visits each year, as well as joint experiments and numerous conferences. For example, of all the Polish universities we have the best relations with the top universities in Japan and we also have good contacts with those in China and Vietnam. And these countries are known for their strong or very fast-growing economies.
• What would you like AGH to achieve in the next 5-10 years?
• I would like it to become the best technical university in Poland. Currently, we are in second or third position, depending on which ranking you choose. We are behind Warsaw Technical University and sometimes behind Wrocław Technical University too, although in recent years we have been ranked higher than the university in Lower Silesia. In terms of the number of both students and staff, we are already the largest technical university in the country. We enjoy a good reputation among many employers and potential students and in this area we compete with our major competitors on equal terms. And what is very important, we manage to integrate our staff, graduates and students. I am convinced that no other university in the country can boast such a degree of integration. We are a family, and it is this for which many envy us.

Metamorfozy AGH

Centra powinny nam umożliwić szybkie wejście do europejskiej czołówki naukowej w tych dziedzinach. Budujemy też najnowsze Centrum Energetyki. Będzie największe (15 tys. m kw. i 38 kompleksów laboratoryjnych) i posłuży do badania niemal wszystkich aspektów energetyki.
• Cieszy mnie to zjawisko. Często topowe firmy same występują z inicjatywą sformalizowania współpracy. Zyskujemy miejsca, gdzie nasi studenci mogą odbywać praktyki i to w kontakcie z nowoczesnym przemysłem.
• O jakiej pozycji AGH w perspektywie najbliższych 5-10 lat pan marzy?
