The Treasures of ‘Jagiellonka’ on Servers

0

Currently, the collections in the Jagiellonian Library exceed five million volumes. Indeed the Jagiellonian University Library is the second largest national library in Poland, after that in Warsaw. The most valuable collections number 1.2 million volumes, among which are such treasures as, for instance, ‘De revolutionibus…’ by Nicolaus Copernicus, who was once a student at Kraków University.
The library is housed in a huge building located on al. Mickiewicza that was built shortly before World War II, although a spacious wing was added in 2001. ‘Jagiellonka’ is also, as mentioned, a national library and Polish law obliges all the Polish publishers of books, as well as the press and audio-visual publishers to submit two copies of their publications to its collections.
Although the library has existed since the end of the fourteenth century, it is in fact very modern. The portal of the Jagiellonian Digital Library has functioned since 2010 and currently 340,000 publications can be found there. However, the process of digitizing the collections of the Jagiellonian Library is still ongoing. As with the National Library, the Patrimonium project has been in operation since the beginning of the current year, and the Polish government has allocated nearly 100 million PLN to it. The purpose of the programme is to convert the most valuable collections of both libraries into a digital form and to create a system enabling them to be shared. This will include manuscripts, old prints, maps, atlases, sheet music, brochures, photographs and periodicals. The project aims to digitize almost 350,000 items in the library. (b)

Skarby „Jagiellonka” w serwerach

Wśród należących do nich najważniejszych skarbów jest m.in. „De revolutionibus…” Mikołaja Kopernika, kiedyś studenta krakowskiego uniwersytetu.
Biblioteka zajmuje potężny gmach przy Al. Mickiewicza zbudowany krótko przed II wojną światową, a w roku 2001 zakończono budowę nowego potężnego skrzydła.
