When staying in Zakopane, for instance, it is well worth visiting Chochołów with its distinctive, yet traditional, architecture. The village is located several kilometres to the west of the capital of the Polish Tatras, but today the trip does not have to be limited to the impressive wooden architecture, because recently a complex of modern mineral baths have been opened.
The central part of the village consists of residential houses that are built perpendicular to the road. They date to the nineteenth century and were constructed from the logs of the local fir trees. Their unique light colour is due to the highlanders’ predilection for cleanliness and even today the outside of each cottage is washed twice a year using the simplest means: hot water, ordinary, grey soap and rice brushes. As a consequence of this treatment the wood gains it individual pale hue.
The village of Chochołów, however, was initially founded at the foot of the Western Tatras in the sixteenth century, near the entrance to the beautiful Chochołowska Valley which cuts into the mountain range. The oldest surviving building was constructed in the late eighteenth century and in the past it belonged to the Bafia family. Today, it houses the Museum of the 1846 Chochołów Uprising, a commemoration of the time when the inhabitants of Chochołów, and several neighbouring villages, rose up against the Austrian authorities, the then rulers of Podhale, as a result of the economic situation. The uprising was put down with the help, and indeed participation, of the inhabitants of the neighbouring village of Czarny Dunajec, which perhaps unsurprisingly has resulted in an ongoing antagonism between the two districts.
Recently, interest in Chochołów has been increased considerably as mineral baths have been constructed. The water used comes from a depth of 4,000 metres and amazingly has a surface temperature of 82 degrees Celsius. This modern facility consists of several outdoor as well as indoor pools, covering a total area of 3,000 square metres. (b)

Tam naprawdę warto się wybrać, na przykład podczas pobytu w Zakopanem. Kilkanaście kilometrów na zachód od stolicy polskich Tatr znajduje się Chochołów, wieś z niezwykle charakterystyczną, tradycyjną zabudową. Od niedawna pobyt tam nie musi kończyć się na podziwianiu drewnianej architektury, bo w miejscowości otwarto nowoczesne termy.
Centralna część Chochołowa zabudowana jest domami mieszkalnymi umieszczonymi prostopadle do ulicy. Pochodzą one przed wszystkim z XIX wieku i wzniesione zostały z drewnianych, jodłowych bali. Domy mają szczególną, bardzo jasną barwę. Zawdzięczają ją upodobaniu miejscowych górali do czystości. Każda z chałup dwa razy do roku jest od zewnątrz szorowana i to przy użyciu najprostszych środków, czyli ciepłej wody z najzwyklejszym, szarym mydłem i ryżowych szczotek. Regularnie poddawana takim zabiegom drewno zyskuje niepowtarzalną, bardzo jasną barwę.

Es ist wirklich wert, sich dorthin auf den Weg zu machen, z.B. während eines Aufenthaltes in Zakopane. Etwas über zehn Kilometer westlich der Hauptstadt der polnischen Tatra befindet sich Chochołów, ein Dorf mit einer äußerst charakteristischen, traditionellen Bebauung. Seit Kurzem muss dort ein Aufenthalt aber nicht mit der Bewunderung der Holzarchitektur enden, denn in dem Ort wurde eine moderne Therme eröffnet.
