90 years of Sobiesław Zasada a master of driving and business

Sobiesław Zasada is still the most famous Polish rally driver, but also one of the richest people in Kraków and the whole country, as well as the founder and owner of one of the largest capital groups in Poland, Sobiesław Zasada S. A. Its companies operate in the automotive, development, manufacturing and lifestyle industries, and employ over 3,000 people. Its founder has just turned 90.
Sobiesław Zasada was born in Dąbrowa Górnicza, but spent his youth in Bielsko-Biała. He was also involved in sports there. He started with table tennis. Then there was athletics. He participated in running, jumping, and javelin. With success, because he was Polish junior vice-champion, for a few years he belonged to the national team. This adventure ended with a serious ski accident in 1953 in the Tatras. However, a year earlier he had already won his first rally, and his pilot was his schoolmate Ewa, who became his wife the same year. Together they won 50 more rallies because after the accident and two years of convalescence Sobiesław Zasada focused on rallies.

As the only driver from behind the „Iron Curtain” dividing Europe at the time, he was the factory driver for the largest automobile companies: from Steyr Puch to Porsche and BMW to Mercedes-Benz. He won the European Rally Championship three times (and vice-championship three times) at a time when this series was equivalent to the world championships. Poles were thrilled by his participation (and many successes) in the most spectacular rallies of the time:

London – Sydney, London – Mexico, Vuelta America del Sur, Gran Premio Argentino, Safari, Press on Regardless, Monte Carlo, Cup of the Alps, Acropolis, Thousand Lakes, Rally of Sweden, and UK.

In 1973, he belonged to the team whose drivers, driving the Polish Fiat 125 p, broke world records in long-distance driving for 25 thousand kilometres, 25 thousand miles and 50 thousand kilometres. As an author of popular books, he was also constantly engaged in promoting safe driving style in normal traffic.

In 1957, he founded his first car workshop in Kraków, and in 1977 the Alpha company, which still exists today, began with the production of locks and today deals with non-ferrous metal pressure casting, mould production, laser processing and computer numerically controlled sheet metal bending. He was also the general representative of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche in Poland.

In 1997, he and his wife took second place in the famous Safari Rally.

In the 21st century, sailing became his passion, although he owned his first yacht as far back as 1980. “At sea, the real challenge is wind speed, which you have to fight,” Sobiesław Zasada explained to me once.

He had a watch one night. The wind was at 30-35 knots. The storm’s mainsail and foresail were tight. Suddenly the wind rose to almost 50 knots. “I thought right away that the sails had to be rolled up, but before I could do anything, it was already blowing 60 knots. That’s more than a hurricane. The wind smoothed out the waves that had just been 7-8 metres high. I was afraid to go from bridge to deck. There was no question of furling the sails. The mast was shaking terribly, and I could only set the boat up so that the wind would hit it from behind. When, after a few tens of minutes, the wind was already blowing at storm speed, I felt like I was in a car, when it was slowing down from over 200 km/h to 130″, he said.

He considers his greatest sporting success under sail to be the great race from the Canary Islands to the port of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. He sailed over 6 thousand km among more than 220 yachts. He reached the finish line as seventeenth, but was first in his class.

Zasada still has not given up sporting and business activities and, as always, infects his surroundings with his unflagging optimism.

90 lat

Sobiesława Zasady

mistrza kierownicy i biznesu

Londyn – Sydney, Londyn – Meksyk, Vuelta America del Sur, Gran Premio Argentino, Safari, Press on Regardless, Monte Carlo, Puchar Alp, Acropolis, Tysiąca Jezior, Rajd Szwecji czy Anglii.

W 1973 roku należał do ekipy, której kierowcy prowadząc Polskiego Fiata 125 p pobili rekordy świata w jeździe długodystansowej na 25 tys. kilometrów, 25 tys. mil i 50 tys. kilometrów.

Sztormowy grot i fok były mocno naprężone. To więcej niż huragan.
