Not far from Krakow, on a hill in Lusin (about 4 km from the Krakow bypass), surrounded by greenery, one finds the International School of Krakow (ISK). The director of the school, Dr. Robert Sims talked to us about the unusual character of education at his school.
• Dr. Sims, driving out here to meet you, one doesn’t at all have the impression of approaching a school…
• To tell the truth, a year-and-a-half ago when I came to ISK for the first time I was also surprised at how beautiful the school was, and how well the building was designed functionally.
• And on the other hand, we are very close to a large city – Krakow.
• The location of the school is not coincidental. It was very important to us that, being right next to a large city, we needed to create a space that was far from the hustle and bustle; that it should have a peaceful, even idyllic character.
• Does this influence the learning?
• The ISK’s surroundings are connected to our philosophy of education. At ISK we don’t enclose ourselves in a “concrete box”. The standards here are completely different. The approach that we offer to teaching and education is much more “spatial”, which is what one finds reflected in the location and shape of our school. This has a very positive influence on learning.
• It also encourages activity…
• We tried to create surroundings which would meet the needs of our students. The layout of the space, the sports field, the sport hall… everything helps them to develop appropriately.
• So tell me about classes in your school.
• That depends on the education level, since we have students from 3 to 18 years of age. But despite the fact that we have such an open approach, our school is accredited by two international institutions, and has very clear educational tracks based on two principles: GOALS – that is to say WHAT one wants to accomplish, as well as PRINCIPALS – which is to say, HOW we wish to reach those goals.
This is why the most important thing for us is an individual approach to the students; to their talents and predispositions. We have children from many different countries, and we offer them the opportunity for the creative and independent discovery of their own paths to development, along with setting individual goals. All of course under the watchful eyes of outstanding teachers.
• Is the school more focused on physical sciences or on humanities?
• Historically the school always specialized very heavily in languages. We have native speaker programs in French, Polish, and English… We also offer other languages. On the other hand, since the time when we undertook the International Baccalaureate program, we have offered courses in every field, both in the physical sciences and the humanities.
We do not concentrate in a single area of studies. Our offering is very diversified. For example, we teach the youngest children first and foremost how to learn, as well as how to use the knowledge they acquire in their everyday life. Beyond this, what is also very important for us, the teachers, is students’ development not only in academic competencies and adapting their knowledge, but also in their social competencies among their classmates. The space at ISK is designed so that the social space should support the development of these competencies. Very often in adult life it is precisely such social skills that play the most important role.
• So whom is this school for?
• We established this school 25 years ago for the needs of the international community, that is to say, for foreigners. Today, cultural diversity is one of the foundations of ISK. On the other hand our school has a very high standard of teaching, which is evident in the unusually high results. For example, two of the graduates of our school have received 44 of the 45 possible points on the international baccalaureate exam, which is an incredible achievement. Such a result is rarely seen anywhere in Poland.
• So how do you find such talented students?
• Our students are normal children and youth. Of course there are a few among them who are unusually talented academically, but the classes in our school are for everyone. Our outlook is that if the students are fascinated with what they’re doing, then learning will come with little difficulty. And we, the teachers and staff, are here to help them discover and develop these abilities and talents. This is why we welcome to our school all who want to find out what they want to do with their lives, develop their passions, and begin or continue their educations.
The International School of Krakow is a “not for profit” school, accredited by international institutions, such as: the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). In its 25 year history it has matriculated many graduates who now occupy high level positions in international firms and institutions.

Nieopodal Krakowa, na wzgórzu w Lusinie (ok. 4 km od obwodnicy Krakowa), w otoczeniu zieleni, znajduje International School of Kraków (ISK). O niecodziennym charakterze nauki w tej szkole opowiedział nam dr Robert Sims, dyrektor ISK.
• Panie Dyrektorze, jadąc do Państwa wcale nie ma się wrażenia, że zmierza się w kierunku szkoły…
• Prawdę mówiąc, kiedy półtora roku temu po raz pierwszy przyjechałem do ISK, również byłem zaskoczony, jak piękna jest ta szkoła i jak funkcjonalnie zaprojektowany został ten budynek.
• Ale z drugiej strony jesteśmy bardzo blisko wielkiej metropolii – Krakowa.
• Lokalizacja szkoły nie jest przypadkowa. Bardzo zależało nam właśnie na tym, by w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie dużego miasta stworzyć miejsce dalekie od zgiełku i hałasu, o spokojnym, sielankowym wręcz charakterze.
• To wpływa na naukę?
• Otoczenie ISK wiąże się z naszą filozofią edukacji. W ISK nie zamykamy się w żadnym „betonowym pudełku”. Tutaj standardy są zupełnie inne. Podejście do ucznia i edukacja, jaką oferujemy, jest o wiele bardziej „przestrzenna”, co odnajduje odzwierciedlenie właśnie w lokalizacji i kształcie naszej szkoły. To bardzo pozytywnie wpływa na naukę.
• Zachęca również do aktywności…
• Staraliśmy się stworzyć otoczenie odpowiadające potrzebom naszych uczniów. Układ pomieszczeń, boiska, sala sportowa… wszystko to pomaga im prawidłowo się rozwijać.
• Jak więc wyglądają zajęcia w Państwa szkole?
• To zależy od etapu edukacji, bo nasi uczniowie mają od 3 do 18 lat. Jednak pomimo tego, że mamy tak otwarte podejście, to nasza szkoła, akredytowana przez dwie międzynarodowe instytucje, ma bardzo klarowne ścieżki nauki oparte na dwóch filarach: GOALS – czyli CO się chce uzyskać oraz PRINCIPALS – czyli JAK chce się osiągnąć ten cel.
Dlatego dla nas najważniejsze jest indywidualne podejście do ucznia, do jego zdolności i predyspozycji. Mamy dzieci z bardzo wielu krajów, którym dajemy możliwość samodzielnego, kreatywnego odnajdywania własnej ścieżki rozwoju oraz wyznaczania indywidualnych celów. Oczywiście pod okiem znakomitych pedagogów.
• Co jest Państwa domeną, nauki ścisłe, czy humanistyczne?
• Historycznie szkoła zawsze specjalizowała się bardzo mocno w językach. Mamy programy native french, polish, english… Proponujemy również inne języki. Natomiast odkąd przyjęliśmy Maturę Międzynarodową (IB) oferujemy kursy z każdej dziedziny, zarówno z nauk ścisłych, jak i z humanistycznych przedmiotów.
Nie koncentrujemy się więc na jakimś jednym obszarze wiedzy. To jest bardzo zróżnicowane. Np. najmłodsze dzieci przede wszystkim uczymy tego, jak się uczyć, a także jak w codziennym życiu wykorzystać wiedzę, którą nabywają. Ponadto dla nas, nauczycieli, bardzo ważny jest rozwój nie tylko kompetencji naukowych, przyswajania wiedzy, ale także kompetencji społecznych wśród uczniów. Pomieszczenia w ISK zaprojektowane są tak, żeby przestrzeń socjalna sprzyjała rozwojowi tych kompetencji. Bardzo często w życiu dorosłym to właśnie umiejętności społeczne odgrywają najważniejszą rolę.
• Dla kogo jest więc ta szkoła?
• 25 lat temu zakładaliśmy tę szkołę dla potrzeb społeczności międzynarodowej, czyli cudzoziemców. Dziś wielokulturowość to jeden z filarów ISK. Z drugiej strony nasza szkoła ma bardzo wysokie standardy nauczania, które przejawiają się w niezwykle wysokimi wynikami. Np. wśród absolwentów naszej szkoły jest 2 uczniów którzy otrzymali 44 na 45 możliwych punktów na IB, co jest niesamowitym osiągnięciem. To w skali całej Polski rzadko się zdarza.
• Jak więc znajdujecie tak uzdolnionych uczniów?
• Nasi uczniowie to normalne dzieci i młodzież. Oczywiście, bywają wśród nich osoby niezwykle uzdolnione akademicko, ale zajęcia w naszej szkole są dla każdego. Uważamy, że jeśli uczniowie są zafascynowani tym, co robią, to nauka przychodzi im bez trudu. A my, nauczyciele i wychowawcy, jesteśmy tu po to, by pomóc im te zdolności i talentu odkryć i rozwijać. Dlatego zapraszamy do naszej szkoły każdego, kto chce dowiedzieć się co chce robić w życiu, rozwijać swoje pasje i rozpocząć lub kontynuować edukację.
