World Discovers Małopolska

According to surveys, Małopolska is the part of the country most frequently visited by foreign tourists. With Cracow as its capital and a population of 3.5 million people, what makes it so popular is its tourist attractiveness and its accessibility.
Cracow, the best known of Poland’s cities worldwide, is rightly regarded as the gem of Małopolska, especially for its splendid architecture and unique atmosphere. But the surrounding region also offers many attractions. Very close to the city is Wieliczka, where there is a 750-year-old salt mine, with underground corridors and chambers containing delightful sculptures conjured up from salt rock by talented miners. A visit also affords the opportunity to learn about the work of salt miners in years gone by.
Visitors to the former Auschwitz concentration camp in the western part of the region will find much to contemplate. The camp was a place of extermination, where nearly 1.5 million victims of Nazism lost their lives.
The Cracow-Częstochowa Hills, with their limestone rocks and medieval castles, are well worth visiting, as are the Pieniny, a very charming mountain range through which the River Dunajec forces its way, and where highlanders carry tourists on traditional rafts through the most attractive gorge.
Zakopane is the second most frequently visited town in the region. It is often called the winter capital of Poland. The peaks of the Tatra Mountains overlook the town, and there are many beautiful walks through the forests, in which brown bears still have their refuge, or higher along the tracks running above mountain lakes to peaks which reach an altitude of 2,500 metres.
Zakopane is a town which delights with its unique wooden architecture, its temperamental regional folk culture and the atmosphere of a mountain tourist station. Lovers of skiing come here in big numbers in winter. What they can count on here are high mountain pistes running from Kasprowy Wierch (almost 2,000 m) and other big skiing stations (Gubałówka, Polana Szymoszkowa, Nosal) and numerous ski runs scattered all over the area. Zakopane has a huge number of places to stay, from cheap but tidy and well equipped small guesthouses to luxury hotels offering the highest standards of service.
In Podhale, an area north of Zakopane, there are also tourist attractions. Białka Tatrzańska with modern chair lifts and several kilometres of ski runs is becoming a very popular skiing station. Tourism near the artificial lake in Czorsztyn, where the station in Kluszkowce attracts many skiers, has also increased considerably.
It is easy to travel to Małopolska. The airport in Balice near Cracow has connections with over 40 destinations in Europe, the USA and Canada, and the region is connected directly to the west-European motorway network.
