Poland – Beautiful Country in Central Europe

Thirty-eight million Poles live in Central Europe at the crossing of North and South and of East and West. Their country, which had its beginnings over 1,000 years ago, is one of the largest countries in Europe, extending over 312,000 square kilometres between the Bug and Odra Rivers and between the Baltic Sea and the peaks of the Carpathian and Sudety Mountains.
Politically, Poland is a parliamentary democracy, is a member of NATO, and has been a member of the European Union for three years. The country, which has experienced a profound economic transformation since 1989, now benefits from around $10bn annually in direct foreign investment, has one of the lowest rates of inflation on the continent and is enjoying economic growth in excess of 5%. Financial means from the EU are now being used for a very dynamic modernisation of the country’s transport systems and other areas of infrastructure. The fact that Poland and Ukraine have been entrusted with hosting the final tournament of the European Football Championship in 2012 will speed up these processes.
The capital city, Warsaw, is one of the most dynamic big-city centres in the region. The standard of living there is improving rapidly and is approaching that of other cities in the countries of the EU, and Poland’s other major cities of Kraków, Łódź, Poznań, Gdańsk, Wrocław and the conurbation centred in Katowice are also developing rapidly.
Visitors to Poland will find it a very attractive country because of its natural diversity. The moderate climate supports extensive forests, and the most beautiful landscapes and areas of natural importance are protected in a network of reserves, including over twenty national parks.
In the south are the Tatra Mountains, the only Alpine-like range between the Alps and the Caucasus, whose peaks reach up to 2,500 m above sea level. Other mountain ranges, from the Bieszczady in the east to the Sudety in the west, are also very interesting. There are numerous specially prepared cycling and hiking routes there, and several dozen modern skiing stations, many of which have artificial snow facilities, attract skiers in winter.
In central, lowland Poland, along the Biebrza and Warta Rivers, many natural bird sanctuaries have been preserved. The northern part of the country is covered with hundreds of lakes, which are grouped in several lake districts. The best known of these, Pojezierze Mazurskie, situated in the northern-eastern part of Poland, is a real haven for sailors, windsurfers, divers, water skiers and all who love the relaxing atmosphere of a quiet lake.
Poland’s 500 km of Baltic coast and its wonderful sandy beaches attract millions of holiday-makers, who can choose between big tourist centres such as Sopot, Kołobrzeg and Świnoujście, vibrant with life, full of entertaining places and cultural and sports events, or one of numerous quiet localities offering relaxation in perfect peace.
The country is littered with beautiful architecture, splendid castles, elegant palaces, beautiful churches, monuments of technology, and museums with extensive collections. In Poland there is no room for only one thing – boredom.
