Of Zion and important anniversaries

2018 marks 30 years since the first edition of the Festival of Jewish Culture in Krakow which Janusz Makuch and Krzysztof Gierat inaugurated at the Mikro Cinema, whose name is appropriate to the size of the theater. From June 22nd to July 1st this year, we will be witnesses to just the 28th edition of the festival, since at the beginning, the festival took place every two years. This year’s edition also marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Israeli nation, and the 100th anniversary of Poland’s recovery of its independence, and is dedicated to Zion.

Thirty years after its first edition, the festival is recognized as the largest presentation of contemporary culture created by Jews throughout the world. In the principal program of the 28th edition of the FJC there are nearly 150 events: from lectures, teaching sessions, and discussions, through workshops, tours, artistic activities and concerts, DJ parties, and religious ceremonies.

Janusz Makuch, the director of the festival, writes: “I understand the love many hold for Krakow and Poland, since I myself share it, which doesn’t prevent me from loving Jerusalem and the land of Israel. For me, Jerusalem and Zion constitute a state of awareness and its light. It is an independence of spirit with a seal in the book of life. I have lived long enough not to have illusions that anything is given to us for eternity. Sooner or later we lose it, since it is either take from us during our lifetime, or we lose our lives, and that ‘something’ loses its meaning. What is meaningful for me is the fact that this year we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Poland’s recovery of its independence, and at the same time the 70th anniversary of the Israeli state. Both countries – one after 2000 years and the second after 123 years – recovered their ‘Zion’. I’d hate to see either of these countries lose their independence again either in my lifetime or ever”.

The organizers add: During the 28th FJC we will present for you a variety of meanings and faces of Zion: historical, musical, and cultural – we encourage you to discover your own Zion right here in Krakow’s Kazimierz, a symbol of Polish-Israeli neighborliness.

The musical culmination of every edition of the festival is a concert titled “Peace on Szeroka Street”. It will take place this year on June 30th on the most famous street of Kazimierz. Among many Jewish musical stars participating from around the world will be the Jazz Band Młynarski – Masecki, playing pre-war Polish jazz.

28. Festiwal Kultury Żydowskiej w Krakowie.

O Syjonie i ważnych rocznicach

I jednocześnie siedemdziesiątą rocznicę państwa Izraela.

– Podczas 28. FKŻ pokażemy Wam różne znaczenia i oblicza Syjonu: historyczne, muzyczne, kulturowe – zaprosimy Was do odkrycia swojego własnego Syjonu właśnie tutaj, na krakowskim Kazimierzu, symbolu polsko-żydowskiego sąsiedztwa – dodają organizatorzy
