An Academy According to Ghery

0

The Kraków Academy of Music, one of the most important colleges in Poland, will finally be given its own campus. Moreover, it will be designed by Frank Ghery, whose works include, among others, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Dancing House in Prague. The California architect’s office won the international competition for the design of the campus, in a competition which included almost 40 designs submitted from all over the world.
The tradition of a music college in Kraków dates back to 1888, when a private conservatory was established in the city. It was transformed into a state university in 1946 and received the status of an Academy in 1979, when Krzysztof Penderecki, the world-famous composer and a graduate of the college, was its rector. The academy, like the other musical institutions in Kraków, has struggled to find satisfactory working conditions for years. The Kraków Opera, for example, was housed in a former military stables for a long time, before being transferred to its own establishment 10 years ago. The Kraków Philharmonic is still housed in the Catholic House, which belongs to the Church. The concert hall fails to meet the requirements for a hall in which symphony orchestras perform, and has not done so for years. At present, preparations for its thorough modernization are under way.
After World War II, the Academy of Music was located by the communist authorities in a building confiscated from the Order of the Ursuline Sisters. After the democratic breakthrough of 1989, the musicians found a home in the former Kraków seat… of the communist party. Unfortunately the college has never had a real concert hall and the conditions under which the student studied were far from ideal. Indeed, on occasions it was said that young musicians even had to practise in the toilets. Fortunately, the situation is about to change.
The new campus will be on left bank of the Vistula River and will fit in well with the existing parkland. A concert hall for about 600 will be the centre of the campus. The construction should start in 2018 and take four years. The Polish government has promised to fully finance the project (ca. PLN 160 million). (b)

Akademia według Ghery’ego

Krakowska Akademia Muzyczna, jedna z najważniejszych uczelni artystycznych w Polsce wreszcie doczeka się własnego kampusu. W dodatku jej projekt sporządzi pracownia Franka Ghery’ego, którego dziełami są m.in.
Obecnie trwają przygotowania do jej głębokiej modernizacji.
