This is what some call a castle located approximately 20 km east of the Royal Wawel Castle, the castle in Kraków that stands on a limestone hill towering above the city. The castle, medieval as far as its history is concerned, and yet Renaissance with regard to its architecture, is to be found in Niepołomice and for centuries served as the summer retreat of the Polish monarchs who resided on Wawel Hill. They frequently moved there to afford themselves protection against epidemics in the city, but more often they and their entourage went there for the hunting in the neighbouring forest.
The castle in Niepołomice has undergone a series of renovations since 1991 and today it is delightful with its square shape and elegant arcaded courtyard. The castle was given this form in the sixteenth century, during the reign of King Sigismund Augustus. The original building, however, was constructed almost two centuries earlier, when King Kazimierz the Great, the last of the Piast dynasty, ruled Poland. The castle went through its most significant period during the time of the Jagiellons, when it became an elegant and comfortable royal residence. It remained so until the mid-seventeenth century when Poland was invaded by the Swedes during the so-called Swedish Deluge.
In the following centuries the castle at Niepołomice served various public functions and after World War II it gradually fell into disrepair. Renovated at the end of the twentieth century, it became the cultural centre of the town, which originated as a settlement that was founded beside the castle by Kazimierz the Great in the Middle Ages. Today, it is one of the most important industrial centres in Małopolska. Dozens of companies, such as Coca-Cola and MAN, are to be found in the local special economic zone.
Now, the former royal castle houses the Museum of Niepołomice and also an interesting exhibition of environmental artefacts collected by the well-known Polish traveller, Włodzimierz Puchalski. Additionally, works of art from the collections of the National Museum in Kraków are exhibited. There are concerts too and recently the residents of Niepołomice welcomed Michał Pazdan, one of the heroes of the Polish national football team which reached the quarter-finals in the 2016 European Championships. Tak nazywany jest zamek położony ok. 20 km na wschód od Wawelu pierwszego, tego na wapiennym wzgórzu górującym nad Krakowem. Średniowieczna historycznie, a renesansowa architektonicznie budowla w Niepołomicach przez stulecie pełniła rolę letniej rezydencji dla polskich monarchów rezydujących na Wawelu. W niepołomickim zamku chronili się przed epidemiami, ale najczęściej wyruszali stamtąd wraz ze świtą na wielkie polowania w sąsiedniej puszczy.
Zamek w Niepołomicach od 1991 roku był sukcesywnie odnawiany. Od kilku lat zachwyca swym czworobocznym kształtem i dziedzińcem z krużgankami. Taką formę zamek otrzymał w XVI wieku, za panowania króla Zygmunta Augusta. Budowla powstała jednak w niemal dwa stulecia wcześniej, kiedy królem Polski był Kazimierz Wielki, ostatni władca z dynastii Piastów. Za Jagiellonów zamek przeżywał swój najlepszy okres. Był elegancką, wygodną rezydencją. Aż do połowy XVII wieku, do najazdu zwanego w Polsce potopem szwedzkim.

„Zweiter Wawel“, so wird das Schloss genannt, das 20 km östlich des ersten auf dem Kalkfelsen über Krakau emporsteigenden Wawel, gelegen ist. Historisch aus dem Mittelalter und architektonisch ein Renaissance-Bauwerk, spielte das Schloss in Niepołomice die Rolle der Sommerresidenz der polnischen Monarchen, die auf dem Wawel residierten. Ins Schloss von Niepołomice zogen sie sich vor Epidemien zurück, jedoch am häufigsten begaben sie sich mit ihrem Gefolge auf große Jagd in den benachbarten Urwald.
