• One year after World Youth Day 2016, which was held in Kraków and in which Pope Francis and millions of pilgrims from around the world participated, many thousands of participants and volunteers who had been part of the event met again in the Tauron Arena for a specially organized concert. Its purpose was to support, and provide financial help, for the victims of the war in Syria.
• A new, the fourth, Phelix research line is to be established at the Solaris National Synchrotron Radiation Centre in Kraków. Its elements will be designed, produced and assembled in Kraków by the German company, FMB Feinwerk und Meßtechnik GmbH. The construction work in total will take two years. The Phelix line will be designed to examine the structure of electrons in solids using photoelectron spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy for soft X-ray fluorescents with variable polarization.
• The public transport system in Kraków now has 77 articulated buses equipped with engines that meet the requirements of Euro 6. This is the largest single delivery of buses in the history of Kraków’s public transportation. The vehicles, worth over PLN 120 million, will replace about 10 percent of the municipal buses in the city. In 2018, the municipality intend to buy another 75 ecological buses.

• W rok od Światowych Dni Młodzieży, jakie w 2016 roku odbyły się w Krakowie z udziałem milionów pielgrzymów z całego świata i papieża Franciszka tysiące ich uczestników i wolontariuszy spotkało się w hali Tauron Arena na specjalnie zorganizowanym koncercie. Jego celem było wsparcie, także materialne ofiar wojny w Syrii.
• W Narodowym Centrum Promieniowania Synchrotronowego Solaris w Krakowie powstanie nowa, czwarta linia badawcza Phelix. Jej elementy zaprojektuje, wyprodukuje i zmontuje w Krakowie niemiecka FMB Feinwerk- und Meßtechnik GmbH. Prace związane z budową linii potrwają 2 lata. Linia Phelix będzie przeznaczona do badania struktury elektronowej ciał stałych przy zastosowaniu spektroskopii fotoelektronów i spektroskopii absorpcyjnej dla miękkiego promieniowania rentgenowskiego o zmiennej polaryzacji.
• Krakowska komunikacja otrzymała 77 autobusów przegubowych wyposażonych w silniki spełniające normę Euro 6. To największa jednorazowa dostawa autobusów w historii krakowskiej komunikacji. Pojazdy mają wartości ponad 120 mln zł. Pozwolą odnowić ok. 10 proc. ogólnej liczby miejskich autobusów w mieście. W 2018 roku miasto ma kupić kolejnych 75 ekologicznych autobusów.

• Ein Jahr nach den Weltjugendtagen, die im Jahr 2016 in Krakau unter der Teilnahme von Papst Franziskus und Millionen Pilgern aus der ganzen Welt stattfanden, haben sich Tausende von daran Beteiligten und Volontären in der Tauron Arena zu einem besonders gestalteten Konzert getroffen. Zweck war die Unterstützung, auch materieller Art, für die Kriegsopfer in Syrien.
• Im Nationalen Zentrum für Synchrotron-Strahlung Solaris in Krakau wird eine neue, vierte Forschungslinie Phelix entstehen. Ihre Komponenten plant, produziert und montiert in Krakau die deutsche Firma FMB Feinwerk- und Messtechnik GmbH. Die mit der Errichtung der Linie verbundenen Arbeiten werden zwei Jahre dauern. Die Linie Phelix wird für die Untersuchung der Elektronenstruktur von Festkörpern bei der Anwendung fotoelektronischer Spektroskopie und absorbierender Spektroskopie für weiche Röntgenstrahlung mit wechselnder Polarisation bestimmt.
• Die Krakauer Verkehrsbetriebe erhielten 77 Gelenkomnibusse, ausgerüstet mit Motoren, die die Norm Euro 6 erfüllen. Dies ist die größte zusammenhängende Lieferung von Omnibussen in der Geschichte der Krakauer Verkehrsbetriebe. Die Fahrzeuge haben einen Wert von über 120 Mio. Zł. Sie erlauben es, etwa 10% der Gesamtzahl an Bussen in der Stadt zu erneuern. 2018 sollen weitere 75 ökologische Omnibusse gekauft werden.

• Kraków has lost another of its extraordinary citizens. Zbigniew Wodecki, a prominent musician and one of the country’s most popular pop singers, died at the age of 67. He was greatly appreciated across the generations.
• One of the most important, and at the same time most neglected, roads leading out of the city, that is the road leading from the city centre towards Warsaw, is to be modernized. The city has allocated 95 million PLN in order to expand and upgrade al. 29 Listopada.
• Natalia Solzhenitsyn, the widow of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the famous dissident from the Soviet Union and a Nobel Prize laureate in 1980, met students at the Jagiellonian University. Through her lecture, she made her late husband and his work relevant to the Polish students.

• Kraków stracił kolejną ze swych niezwykłych osobowości. W wieku 67 lat zmarł Zbigniew Wodecki, wybitny i jeden z najpopularniejszych w kraju piosenkarz sceny pop. Był bardzo lubiany przez publiczność wielu pokoleń.
• Najbardziej zaniedbana z ważnych tras wylotowych z Krakowa, ta wiodąca z centrum miasta w kierunku Warszawy, zostanie głęboko zmodernizowana. Na poszerzenie i unowocześnienie Al. 29 Listopada miasto przeznaczyło 95 milionów PLN.
• Ze studentami Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego spotkała się wdowa po Aleksandrze Sołżenicynie, słynnym dysydencie w Związku Radzieckim i laureacie literackiego Nobla (1980). Natalia Sołżenicyna w wygłoszonym wykładzie przybliżyła młodym Polakom postać męża i jego twórczość.

• Krakau hat eine weitere seiner bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten verloren. Im Alter von 67 Jahren starb Zbigniew Wodecki, der hervorragende und im ganzen Land überaus populäre Sänger aus der Pop-Szene. Er war beim Publikum vieler Generationen sehr beliebt.
• Die am stärksten vernachlässigte unter den wichtigen Ausfallstraßen aus Krakau, die vom Stadtzentrum in Richtung Warschau führt, wird grundlegend modernisiert. Für die Verbreiterung und Erneuerung der Al. 29 Listopada hat die Stadt 95 Millionen Złoty veranschlagt.
• Mit Studenten der Jagiellonen-Universität traf sich die Witwe Alexandr Solschenizyns, des berühmten Dissidenten in der Sowjetunion und Trägers des Literatur-Nobelpreises (1980). Natalia Solschenizyn brachte in einem Referat den jungen Polen die Persönlichkeit ihres Ehemanns und dessen Werk näher.

• At this year’s Hannover Trade Fair, the largest event of its kind in the world, Poland as the partner country of the event, had the largest stand. Products and technologies created by Polish scientific institutions were on display. The Kraków scientific community was represented by the Academic Centre for Materials and Nanotechnology of the AGH University of Science and Technology, the Bronowice Cyclotron Centre and the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS.
• Prof. Jerzy Vetulani, one of the most distinguished figures in Polish science, a graduate of the Jagiellonian University, a psychopharmacologist, a neurobiologist and a biochemist has died at the age of 81. He was knocked down by a car on his way home from his work in the Institute of Pharmacology at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Prof. Vetulani was one of the most widely cited Polish researchers, a great personality and a great populariser of science.
• Rafael Ansón Oliart, Honorary President of the International Academy of Gastronomy, the Royal Spanish Academy of Gastronomy and the creator of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, determined by the San Pellegrino ranking, visited Kraków. He urged the city authorities to promote culinary tourism, claiming that Kraków has all the assets needed to succeed.

• Podczas tegorocznych targów przemysłowych w Hanowerze, największej tego rodzaju imprezie na świecie, Polska, jako kraj partnerski wydarzenia dysponowała największym stoiskiem. Prezentowane na nim były produkty i technologie przygotowane przez polskie instytucje naukowe. Krakowskie środowisko naukowe reprezentowały tam Akademickie Centrum Materiałów i Nanotechnologii AGH, Centrum Cyklotronowe Bronowice oraz Narodowe Centrum Promieniowania Synchrotronowego SOLARIS.
• W wyniku potrącenia przez samochód w drodze z pracy, czyli krakowskiego Instytutu Farmakologii PAN zmarł prof. Jerzy Vetulani, jedna z najwybitniejszych postaci polskiej nauki. Urodzony w 1936 r. absolwent Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego – psychofarmakolog, neurobiolog i biochemik – był jednym z najczęściej cytowanych polskich badaczy, wielką osobowością i znakomitym popularyzatorem nauki.
• W Krakowie gościł Rafael Ansón Oliart, honorowy prezydent Międzynarodowej Akademii Gastronomicznej oraz Królewskiej Hiszpańskiej Akademii Gastronomicznej i twórca rankingu The World’s 50 Best Restaurants by San Pellegrino. Namawiał władze miasta do promocji turystyki kulinarnej, twierdząc że Kraków dysponuje wszystkimi atutami potrzebnymi do osiągnięcia tu sukcesu.

• Während der diesjährigen Industriemesse in Hannover, der größten Veranstaltung dieser Art auf der Welt, hatte Polen, als Partnerland dieses Ereignisses, den größten Stand. Präsentiert wurden dabei Produkte und Technologien, die durch polnische wissenschaftliche Institutionen vorbereitet wurden. Das wissenschaftliche Umfeld Krakaus wurde dort durch das Akademische Zentrum für Werkstoffe und Nanotechnologie der Universität für Wissenschaft und Technologie (AGH), das Zyklotron-Zentrum Bronowice sowie das Nationale Zentrum für Synchrotron-Strahlung SOLARIS vertreten.
• Prof. Jerzy Vetulani, eine der bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten der polnischen Wissenschaft, ist gestorben, nachdem er auf dem Weg zur Arbeit, d.h. zum Pharmakologischen Institut PAN, von einem Auto angefahren worden war. Geboren im Jahre 1936, Absolvent der Jagiellonen-Universität – Psychopharmakologe, Neurologe und Biochemiker – war er einer der am häufigsten zitierten polnischen Forscher, eine große Persönlichkeit, die die Wissenschaft hervorragend popularisieren konnte.
• In Krakau zu Gast war Rafael Ansón Oliart, Ehrenpräsident der Internationalen Akademie für Gastronomie und der Königlichen Spanischen Akademie für Gastronomie sowie Schöpfer der Rangliste „The World‘s 50 Best Restaurants by San Pellegrino“. Er veranlasste die Verwaltung der Stadt zu einer Werbekampagne für die kulinarische Touristik, indem er feststellte, dass Krakau über alle notwendigen Trümpfe verfügt, um hierbei Erfolge zu erzielen.

• The Jagiellonian University and Samsung have signed an agreement to cooperate within the fields of research, science and didactics. Using its own expertise and experience, with a particular focus on linking the academic and the economic, Samsung plans to work with the Jagiellonian University on R & D projects in order to stimulate both innovation and knowledge transfer. The agreement assumes a long-term cooperation to develop new technologies and communications, to exchange expertise in these fields as well as to apply the particular knowledge and experience of specialists. The specific forms of cooperation will be defined in separate detailed agreements. The research collaboration will primarily be with the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University.
• According to the European Patent Office, the Jagiellonian University heads the list of Polish patent applicants. In 2016, the number of patents granted by the European Patent Office (EPO) to Polish companies and scientific institutes increased by 19.2%. Last year, the EPO awarded 180 patents (as compared with 151 in 2015) to Polish research institute and companies, which is a new record.
• Almost 6,000 foreign students studied in the Małopolska Province in the 2015/2016 academic year. Among these were Ukrainians (66.6%), Norwegians (6.9%), Belarussians (4.5%), Americans (2.3%) and Kazakhs (1.7%).

• Uniwersytet Jagielloński i firma Samsung podpisały porozumienie o współpracy badawczo-rozwojowej, naukowo-badawczej oraz dydaktycznej. Samsung,, wykorzystując własną wiedzę i doświadczenie oraz zapewniając współpracę środowiska akademickiego z otoczeniem gospodarczym, planuje współpracować z Uniwersytetem Jagiellońskim przy projektach badawczo-rozwojowych w celu pobudzania innowacyjności i transferu wiedzy. Porozumienie zakłada długofalowe współdziałanie przy opracowywaniu i rozwijaniu projektów z dziedziny nowych technologii, komunikacji, jak i wymiany w tym zakresie zdobytych doświadczeń oraz korzystania z wiedzy i doświadczenia specjalistów. Konkretne formy współpracy będą określane w odrębnych umowach szczegółowych. W pierwszej kolejności współpraca badawcza będzie się odbywała przede wszystkim z Wydziałem Matematyki i Informatyki Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego (WMiI UJ)
• Z danych Europejskiego Urzedu Patentowego wynika, że Uniwersytet Jagielloński znajduje się na czele listy polskich podmiotów składających tam najwięcej wniosków patentowych. W 2016 roku liczba patentów przyznanych przez Europejski Urząd Patentowy (EPO) polskim spółkom i instytutom naukowym wzrosła o 19,2%. W ubiegłym roku EPO przyznał polskim instytutom badawczym i przedsiębiorstwom 180 patentów (151 w roku 2015), co stanowi nowy rekord.
• W roku akademickim 2015/2016 w województwie małopolskim uczyło się niemal 6 tys. zagranicznych studentów. Wśród nich najwięcej było Ukraińców (66,6%), Norwegów (6,9%), Białorusinów (4,5%), Amerykanów (2,3%) i Kazachów (1,7%).

• Die Jagiellonen-Universität und die Firma Samsung haben ein Abkommen über eine Zusammenarbeit auf den Gebieten Forschung und Entwicklung, wissenschaftliche Forschung sowie Didaktik unterschrieben. Die Firma Samsung, die ihr eigenes Wissen und ihre Erfahrung nutzt sowie für die Zusammenarbeit des akademischen Umfelds mit Wirtschaftskreisen sorgt, plant ihre Zusammenarbeit mit der Jagiellonen-Universität bei Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekten mit dem Ziel, Innovationen und den Transfer von Wissen anzuregen. Das Abkommen eröffnet eine langfristige Zusammenarbeit bei der Bearbeitung und Entwicklung von Projekten auf den Gebieten neue Technologien, Verkehr, wie auch in diesen Bereichen den Austausch der gewonnenen Erfahrungen sowie die Inanspruchnahme des Wissens und der Erfahrung der Spezialisten. Die konkreten Formen der Zusammenarbeit werden in besonderen, ausführlichen Verträgen bestimmt. Zu Beginn wird die Zusammenarbeit in der Forschung vor allem mit der Fakultät für Mathematik und Informatik der Jagiellonen-Universität (WMiI UJ) stattfinden.

• Rod Stewart delighted his audience in Kraków. The singer, whose records have sold 250 million copies worldwide, gave a concert in the Tauron Arena.
• This year, Radio Kraków, the oldest radio station in Małopolska and the second oldest in Poland, is celebrating its 90th anniversary. Radio Kraków is a public radio station, which is most well-known for broadcasting live the bugle call from the tower of St Mary’s Church in Kraków’s Main Market Square, something which it has done since 1927.
• Klaudia Sitarz, a 19-year-old athlete from AZS-AWF Kraków, broke the junior 60m hurdles world record at the Polish senior indoor championships held in Toruń. Klaudia’s new record is 8 seconds. The previous world record was 8.06 seconds, a record which had stood since 1983.

• Rod Stewart oczarował krakowską publiczność. Wokalista, którego płyty zostały sprzedane na całym świecie w łącznym nakładzie 250 milionów egzemplarzy wystąpił w Tauron Arenie.
• Radio Kraków, najstarsza rozgłośnia w Małopolsce i druga pod względem wieku w Polsce, obchodzi w tym roku 90-lecie istnienia. Radio Kraków to rozgłośnia publiczną. Jego najbardziej charakterystyczną audycją jest nadawana od 1927 roku codzienna transmisja hejnału z wieży kościoła Mariackiego na krakowskim Rynku Głównym.
• Klaudia Sitarz, 19-letnia lekkoatletka klub AZS-AWF Kraków pobiła rekord świata juniorek w biegu na 60 m przez płotki. Po jej zwycięstwie w halowych mistrzostwach Polski seniorów rozegranych w Toruniu wynosi on równe 8 sekund. Poprzedni rekord świata przetrwał od 1983 roku i wynosił 8,06 sekund.

• Radio Kraków, der älteste Radiosender in Małopolska und der zweitälteste in Polen, begeht in diesem Jahre sein 90-jähriges Bestehen. Radio Kraków ist ein öffentlich-rechtlicher Rundfunksender. Seine charakteristischste Sendung ist die seit 1927 stattfindende tägliche Übertragung des Trompetensignals „Hejnał“ vom Turm der Marienkirche auf dem Krakauer Hauptmarkt.
• Klaudia Sitarz, die 19-jährige Leichtathletin vom Club AZS-AWF Kraków, stellte einen Weltrekord für Junioren über die 60 m Hürdenstrecke auf. Bei ihrem Sieg bei den polnischen Hallenmeisterschaften in Toruń erreichte sie eine Zeit von genau 8 Sekunden. Der vorige Weltrekord bestand sei 1983 und betrug 8,06 Sekunden.
