„Fotografie Ewy Ćwikły, Polki, której drugą ojczyzną stała się Holandia,  mają w sobie coś niepokojącego, mrocznego, barokowego.  Są niecodzienne, kapryśne, dalekie od oczekiwań związanych z dzisiejszą fotografią portretową. Zauważalny w nich dialog ze sztuką holenderską i flamandzką Złotego Wieku determinuje nieomal całkowicie charakteryzację jej modelek i modeli oraz kompozycję zdjęć. I te niezwykłe efekty, które elektryzują nas w zetknięciu z jej sztuką, nie biorą się li tylko z maniery, która w fotografii ale też i w filmie jest rozpoznawalna i nazywana technicznie „światłem Caravaggia” czy też „światłem Rembrandta”. Sposób jej obrazowania oparty jest o autentyczny zachwyt i zrozumienie tego malarstwa, ale też i klimatu Holandii XVII wieku, który chłonęła zwiedzając kolekcje muzealne i miasta nasycone przez wieki duchem wielkich mistrzów.

Fotografie Ewy Ćwikły wyróżniają się perfekcją aranżacji studyjnej, perfekcją widzenia człowieka jako malarskiej formy, matematyczną nieomal precyzją ustawienia światła sztucznego, które raz skupia się na wybranym motywie, w innym miejscu rozproszone, płynie z kilku jego źródeł.  I mimo tej wytężonej kreacji studyjnej, od charakteryzacji modela po dialog różnych typów zastosowanego oświetlenia, w mistrzowskich portretach Ewy Ćwikły nie ma patosu i sztuczności, przerysowanego gestu, przekłamanej mimiki.

Jest dla nas zaszczytem, że możemy to niezwykłe oeuvre fotograficzne zaprezentować jako pierwsi w Polsce w ramach Miesiąca Fotografii w Krakowie, w naszej galerii, mieszczącej się w samym sercu naszego miasta.”

The photographs of Ewa Ćwikła, a Pole whose second homeland is the Netherlands, have something disturbing, dark, baroque in them. They are unusual, capricious, far removed from the expectations associated with today’s portrait photography. Her models as well as the composition of the photographs is clearly and almost completely determined by the dialogue with the art of the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age. And these extraordinary effects which stun us in contact with her art do not derive only from the manner which is recognizable both in photography and in the film and is technically known as “Caravaggio light ” or “Rembrandt light”.  Her images are inspired by her genuine admiration and understanding of this trend in painting as well as of the atmosphere of the 17th century Netherlands, which she absorbed while visiting Dutch museum collections and cities permeated for centuries by the spirit of the great masters. The photographs of Ewa Ćwikła are distinguished by the perfection of a studio arrangement, the perfect perspective on a human being as a painterly form, an almost mathematical precision in setting the artificial light, which is once focused on a chosen motive, and elsewhere scattered, flowing from several sources. And despite this strenuous studio artistry, from characterizing the model to the dialogue of various types of lighting she employs, in her master portraits there is no pathos or artificiality, exaggerated gesture or false face expressions.

It is an honour for our gallery, which is located in the very heart of our city, to be able to present this extraordinary photographic oeuvre as part of Cracow’s Photomonth – for the first time in Poland.
