The ‘Lady’ in the Main Building

0

The most famous painting in the collections held in Kraków, and indeed in Poland, the ‘Lady with an Ermine’ by Leonardo da Vinci is currently being displayed in a different location. It has been transferred to the Main Building of the National Museum in Kraków (al. 3 Maja) whereas, over the past few years, it has been exhibited at the Wawel Royal Castle.

The relocation of one of Leonardo da Vinci’s extant paintings is directly linked to a recent agreement, an agreement which is worth 100 million euros, between the Polish government and the Czartoryski Princes Foundation. The state authorities paid the Czartoryski Family Foundation this sum in order to buy their collection, which dates from the beginning of the 19th century and to which various members of the family contributed, although Isabela of Flemming Czartoryska initiated the idea. The image by Leonardo da Vinci mentioned above, which is part of this collection, was previously displayed at the Czartoryski Museum in Kraków, where it had been since 1878.
A few years ago, the Czartoryski Foundation began the process of renovating this museum. Initially, the ‘Lady’ was exhibited at temporary exhibitions in Budapest, Madrid, Berlin, London and Warsaw. Due to the considerable delays in completing the renovation of the Czartoryski Museum, the painting was displayed from 2012 in a beautiful Renaissance hall especially redesigned for it at the Wawel Royal Castle.
After the Czartoryski collection was bought by the government, the National Museum in Kraków became responsible for the painting and it was decided that it should be moved to the Main Building of the museum. A larger hall than that in Wawel Castle was chosen and visitors will be able to focus fully on the work of the Renaissance master as it will be the only painting exhibited.
The image itself, which in fact is not large (53.4 cm x 39.3 cm), was created on a walnut board around 1490. It depicts Cecilia Gallerani, a lady of the Milan court and the mistress of Prince Ludovico Sforza. The work was purchased by the Czartoryskis, most probably in Italy, in the 1800s.
Upon the completion of the renovation of the Czartoryski Museum, which was also part of the agreement, the Polish government intends the image to return to its original home in Kraków. (b)

„Dama” w Gmachu Głównym

Najsłynniejszy obraz w polskich i krakowskich zbiorach malarskich, „Dama z gronostajem” Leonardo da Vinci wystawiana jest w nowym miejscu. Obraz przeniesiono do Gmachu Głównego Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie (Al. 3 Maja).
Przedstawia Cecylię Gallerani, damę mediolańskiego dworu i kochankę księcia Ludovica Sforzy.
