The Legend of Mnich

Legend has it that long ago, a poor boy fell in love with a girl from a well-off family. Her parents did not even want to hear about their marriage, so the boy dressed up in the garb of a monk, kidnapped his beloved and fled with her to the mountains. Unfortunately, the gods punished the young man for what he had done and turned him into a huge rock. The tears of the girl, longing for her brave boy, created a lake at the foot of the rock. This is just one of the legends of how the summit of Mnich (2,068 m), which is situated above Morskie Oko Lake in the Tatra Mountains, came into existance
The peak is in fact one of the most fascinating peaks in the Tatras. This is not only because of its monk-like shape, but because of the challenge it poses to climbers, who are intriged by a 230 metre almost vertical wall that descends towards the surface of the largest lake in the Tatras. The mountain was first conquered in 1880 and thirty years later it was climbed in winter for the first time. Those climbing expeditions, however, were undertaken using easier routes, because the said vertical wall was still too great a challenge for the climbers of the day. The edge of the sheer wall was only climbed for the first time in 1942, and finally in 1955 the wall itself was conquered, an achievement which was made possible only through the use of hooks. It was not until 1991 that the wall was climbed without any such assistance.
Today, Mnich and its extraordinary wall are conquered by climbers almost every day. Their struggle with the height and the danger can be observed through binoculars by those tourists who prefer the rather safer trails near Morskie Oko. (b)

Legenda Mnicha

Niebiosa jednak ukarały kochanka zamieniając go w potężną skałę. U jej stóp powstało jezioro, które wypełniły łzy dziewczyny tęskniącej za swym śmiałym chłopcem. To tylko jedna z legend jaka otacza szczyt Mnich (2068 m n.p.m.) położony nad Morskim Okiem w Tatrach.
To jeden z najbardziej fascynujących szczytów w Tatrach.
