The exhibition Masterless Voices is Ines Doujak’s first individual show in Poland.
Doujak studied Textiles at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, but she quickly abandoned traditional crafts in favor of art, inspired by the native peoples of South America and their belief that textiles are bearers of cultural knowledge.
The body is another significant area of interest for her, in particular the body as a cultural construct which is at the same time subject to abrasive influences from the political and social sphere as well as from different ideologies. Doujak’s reflections on the skin (as an external veneer) and the hermetic world of fashion are an extension of this train of thought; the artist sows confusion in that world, employing the latter’s own devices including fabrics, clothing and the fashion show.
At the exhibition in Bunkier Sztuki Gallery, collages from her series Skins will be presented, which make use of educational posters and a medical atlas from the beginning of the 20th century. In the collages, the artist associates the human body with plants and animals, constructing “hybrid creatures”. Ines Doujak believes that skin changes and rare diseases bring us closer to the primal world of plants and animals, and in fact are emanations of the latter. She’s also interested in poisonous and hallucinogenic plants, using them in the same away as early peoples – to push the limits of the mind and body.
Under the rubric Not Dressed for Conquering – which rejects the label power dressing that’s ubiquitous in pop-culture today – we’ll see works playing with concepts of high and low art, and we’ll look at fashion as a global business, examining its roots (literally) embedded in cutting up and stitching things together, i.e. haute couture.
At the exhibition opening in Bunkier Sztuki, there’ll be a performance by Ines Doujak in which she’ll not only present costumes which she has designed, but also new fabrics relevant to the Polish context.

Wystawa Bezpańskie głosy to pierwsza w Polsce indywidualna wystawa Ines Doujak.
Doujak studiowała tkactwo na wiedeńskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych, jednak szybko porzuciła tradycyjne rzemiosło na rzecz sztuki, zainspirowana przekonaniem rdzennych ludów Ameryki Południowej, że tkanina dźwiga wiedzę kulturową.
Drugim istotnym obszarem jej zainteresowań jest ciało, w szczególności ciało jako kulturowa konstrukcja, a jednocześnie przedmiot ścierania się wpływów różnych ideologii, sfery społecznej i politycznej. Przedłużeniem tego nurtu myślenia są rozważania Doujak na temat skóry jako naszej zewnętrznej powłoki i hermetycznego świata mody; artystka sieje zamęt w tym świecie, posługując się jego własnymi narzędziami – tkaniną, ubraniem, pokazem mody.
Na wystawie w Galerii Bunkier Sztuki zostaną zaprezentowane kolaże z cyklu Karnacje [Skins], wykorzystujące tablice edukacyjne i atlas medyczny z początku dwudziestego wieku. W kolażach artystka łączy ludzkie ciało z roślinami i zwierzętami i konstruuje „międzygatunkowe stworzenia”. Ines Doujak wierzy, że zmiany skórne, rzadkie choroby przybliżają nas do pierwotnego świata roślin i zwierząt, są ich emanacją; interesuje się też roślinami trującymi i halucynogennymi i używa ich w takim samym celu jak ludy pierwotne – żeby przekroczyć granice ciała i umysłu.
Pod hasłem Not Dressed for Conquering („Nieubrani do zdobywania”) – które odrzuca powszechny dziś w popkulturze tzw. power dressing – zobaczymy prace grające z pojęciami sztuki wysokiej i niskiej, spojrzymy na modę jako na biznes globalny, przyglądając się jej korzeniom tkwiącym – dosłownie – w krojeniu i zszywaniu, czyli Haute Couture,
Podczas wernisażu w Bunkrze Sztuki odbędzie się performance Ines Doujak, w którym nie tylko zaprezentowane będą zaprojektowane przez nią stroje, lecz również nowe tkaniny odnoszące się do kontekstu polskiego.
